Oh No! Parent Control
Version history
New features, improvements, and fixes, release by release.
v1.4
Latest releaseNew Features
- Language Dialog: You can search for a language by its English name as well as its localized name.
- Remaing Time Reminders: Added default critical reminders in child session. Reminders can show in full-screen apps and can be customized, or completely removed, in child preferences.
- Parent App: Revoke dialog shows list of running soft blocked apps that will be terminated.
- Parent App: Face lifting:) Smoother app loading experience; Neat app list loading overlay with percentage progress.
- What's New: Added metadata-driven What's new infra for parent and child app. Parent version offers everything (no mercy to to parents, Grr!); child version only offers carefully crafted content relevant and appropriate to them (we're responsible parents, aren't we all?)
- Request Time Form: You can customize the preset times in preferences!
- Request Time Form: You can select between minutes and hours as custom value unit (feature asked by my son. Upon a glad nodding, he asked, daddy, it'd be cool to add seconds and days, before being yelled at "out, before I kick you cute little butt, again!")
Bug Fixes
- Installation: Fixed package-trigger errors after a denied kiosk login on Ubuntu and Fedora, and when a child's screen time is exhausted.
- Kiosk: Fixed unintended desktop access by restricting the kiosk account to the request app and its required services.
- Kiosk: Fixed startup failures when unrelated installed applications have writable data directories.
- Kiosk: Fixed a Fedora startup crash caused by missing GPU rendering permission.
- Child App: Fixed countdown freezes during continuous use and premature screen locking after inactivity.
- Child App: Fixed the desktop staying locked after successful authentication when more screen time has been granted.
- Screen Time: Fixed unnecessary error reports after unlocking and improved recovery from temporary timer-service failures.
- Broker: Fixed startup failures caused by temporary trust-database lock contention and preserved bounded dependency diagnostics after service recovery without collecting personal data.
- Broker: Added automatic recovery when the fapolicyd service exits with an error.
- Parent App: Parent app app grid column headers on some RTL languages overlap
- Parent App: Fixed the disabled Revoke button at zero remaining time when soft-blocked apps are still running, allowing parents to close those apps after the child’s session locks.
- Child App: In Kiosk session, hitting enter in after typing custom value does not trigger auth dialog
Non Product Changes
- Increased e2e coverage to 46. Fedora is covered, no double counting.
Fedora Workstation 44 Readiness
- Manaul Testing: Old daddy magically dug out an even older Surface Laptop, and miraculously installed Fedora 44 on it. At the end of the day, VMs don't replace the touch and feel on a real computer (remember the v1.1 bug fix?). 5 bug fixes later, it's working!
- Test Automation: One big step closer - Fedora automation just got a promotion to 1st class citizen, its coverage is on par with Ubuntu. Fedora release is on the horizon!!!
v1.3
New Features
- Localization: Supports 62 languages, including RTL (you voted, we listened! Don't get spoiled though :) Do me a favor, spread the word out, help more families!)
Bugs
- Parent and kiosk: Added a reboot-required modal with a red Reboot now button for pending product updates; unrelated system reboot requests do not trigger it.
Fedora Workstation 44 Readiness
- Across the board: Fixed a few blocking issues across fdpolicy import, SELinux, Broker. Basic testing proves the product is working end to end (yeah!). Next step: more manual testing and crazy automation coverage. Don't get excited too early. 10% effort on product, 90% on testing, matches my 30yr experience.
Non Product Changes
- Increased e2e coverage to 33
v1.2
Bug Fixes
- Software Updater: Fixed the description to match the app name.
- Packaging: Removed internal tools and documentation from the package.
- Screen-time bug Fixed screen-time changes failing when fapolicyd 1.3.6 could not represent certain filenames. The fix skips unnecessary exceptions for already-blocked files and validates rules before changing settings, with clearer errors for unsupported cases.
- Broker: Fixed Lunar Client auto-launching and launching an in-memory Minecraft AppImage while soft-blocked.
- Broker: Hardened execution probes with isolated D-Bus clients, retained late replies, recoverable cleanup, and stricter execution identity checks.
- Child App: Fixed timer recovery after waking from suspend and added privacy-safe diagnostics for countdown refresh failures. Thanks to the user who sent a crash report on September 27, 2026!
New Features
- Logging: Added more troubleshooting logs without logging personally identifiable information.
- Logging: Changed log timestamps from local time to UTC.
- Feedback dialog: Log collection now runs asynchronously, and the Send feedback button stays disabled until collection finishes. Logs now include system information, without personally identifiable information.
- Parent App: Clarified the How it's calculated explanation.
- Child App: Added the oh-no-parent-control-child command as an alias for oh-no-parent-control --child-overlay to support future expansion to other distributions and desktop environments.
Non Product Changes
- Automated 24 end-to-end test cases to strengthen quality checks.
v1.1
Bug Fixes
- Parent App: Fixed an issue where Daily Allowance would not expand on small screens.
- Broker: Fixed execution policies failing to reload when unchanged rule files masked stale active rules.
v1.0
New Features
- Initial release.
